Roald Amundsen (1872-1928) was a Norwegian explorer who was the first person to fly over the North Pole May 11-13 1926. Amundsen was the first person to get to the south pole. his expedition reached the South Pole on December 14, 1911 traveling by dog sled. Amundsen was also the first person to sail around the world through the Northeast and Northwest passages. He was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. Amundsen died in a plane crash attempting to rescue his friend. Douglas Mawson was in the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909 which was led by Ernest Shackleton. Mawson was among the first to climb Antarctica's Mount Erebus. Mawson led the British, Australian, and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition 1929. Early in his career Mawson identified and named the radioactive mineral Davidite Mawson. Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton 1872-1922 was a British explorer. Shackleton's first voyage was with Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Edward Wilson on the British National Antarctic Discovery Expedition 1901-1904 in which they undertook a sledge journey over the Ross Ice Shelf. |

Robert Falcon Scott ( 1868-1912) was a British naval officer in Antarctic . Scott led two expeditions to the South Pole, and died on the second trip. Scott and two crew members tried to cross the Ross Ice shelf on a sled November 1902.
